The Sufi Tradition
We are proud to introduce this collection of books by Omar Ali-Shah published in the
past years from around the world. This collection of titles includes material edited
from talks and writings given by Omar Ali-Shah to his friends and followers for the
past 25 years as well as translations of Sufi classics. All these books contain practical
information about the contemporary practice of Sufism in the western context under the
teaching of living Master.
These books give the reader the possibility to penetrate and have a first hand impression
of the communication between a contemporary Teacher and his pupils within a line of
teaching that has been available to mankind for thousands of years.
The chapters touch upon various themes, in the context of the activities presently carried
out by the students of this active philosophy, within functioning groups established mainly
in the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America. Throughout the books, the historical
and technical background of the Naqshbandi Order are provided. The tone is colloquial and
accessible, illustrated with teaching stories, experiences and humor.
The general public can benefit from books such as these, even if the reader has no prior
interest or information on the Sufi Tradition. The approach of common sense and simplicity
adopted by Omar Ali-Shah's books is helpful in dealing with the pressures and conditioning
a person is subjected to in the course of everyday life, while it expresses a vastly ancient
way of thought in a familiar and simple twentieth-century vocabulary and context.

"The Sufi Tradition is not a religion nor is it a cult. It is a philosophy of life, and
its purpose is to offer to man a practical path to enable him to achieve a measure of
higher development, (and) through this elevated consciousness, to be able to understand
his relationship with the Supreme Being.
We hold that the purity of man's inner being, in harmony with the Scheme of the Master
Designer, can lift him from the mundane and shield him from the corruption and contamination
of the world outside. This does not mean a need to retreat into a mountain cave or hermitage.
On the contrary, it means to be a full (and) better member of society; to be in the World and
not of the World; to follow rules and disciplines to bring an inner peace, and by example,
to instruct other worthy people, with humility and purpose; to hark to the voice of Nature
that the secrets of the Tradition may become known, but only to those whose intentions are
pure,(and who)can swear, Witnessed be the Lord of Life, that they will use the Wisdoms truly
and well.
The Tradition is offered to the West with sincerity and deep purpose. If the Sufi message
finds an echo in the West, then let its fraternity transcend time and distance, and may the
sharing of the Secrets bring this planet into Divine Favour."
--Sayed Omar Ali-Shah Naqshband

On the Author:
The Sufi Master and writer Sayed Omar Ali-Shah was born in 1922 into an Afghan family that
traces itself through the Prophet Mohammed to the Sassanian Emperors of Persia. His ancestry
can be traced back to the year 122 BC, possibly the oldest lineage recorded on earth. His
father is the Sirdar Ikbal Ali-Shah, a recognized writer on oriental and Sufi themes, and
he is the brother of Idries Shah, author of numerous books on the Sufi tradition. As the
custodians and modern day exponents of the millenary teaching of inner wisdom and conscious
development, often referred to as The Tradition, the Shah family has intentionally impacted
Western thought by collecting, preserving and making available this way of development.
